Excerpts
Excerpt #1
We sat across from each other at a small, round, wooden table in the crowded restaurant where Tara had insisted on eating. It seemed swanky with its beige table clothes and polished silverware, and we’d had to drive a few miles to reach it. The occupants of the tables around us were largely wealthy looking Latinos and people of Afro-Caribbean decent. The restaurant felt more crowded than it actually was because the tables had been pressed together to form a clearing where a few couples danced. Tara tapped her fingers against the table rhythmically to the beat of a heavily Caribbean infused song. An awkward silence spread between us. I thought she was crazy, and she was obviously aware of the fact. That caused a bit of discomfort, I guess. The idea that she found my suspicion amusing made me even more convinced that she was an insane asylum escapee.
“You are being unusually quiet,” I said, leaning across the table and placing my hand on top of hers, effectively stopping the tapping.
She looked at me with a challenge in her eyes. “How would you know,” she paused dramatically, “Dylan?”
I rolled my eyes. “Oh, please. Don’t start with that reincarnation crap.”
Her eyes narrowed. She looked dangerous. “Crap? Really? You can call what we shared crap? That’s just insensitive.”
“Tara, I don’t remember. This all sounds far-fetched to me.” I softened my voice as I tried to calm her. If she was dangerous, I didn’t want to upset her before I got the hell away from her.
She nodded. “Fine. Why am I here with you? Why did you even ask me to come if this is all crap to you?”
I shrugged. Why had I asked her? The truth was that I wanted to be around her. Crazy or not, I needed to get to know her. I couldn’t explain it, so instead, I lied. “I was hungry and thought you might be too.”
“Huh. Well, let’s order and eat so I can get the hell out of here.” Her voice dripped with annoyance.
“Tara, can’t we just get to know each other?”
She shot daggers at me with her eyes. “I already know you.”
Excerpt #2
Oh my God. I held my breath. This was going to happen. The giddiness was almost too much to take, but as she unzipped my pants, I heard a door upstairs open and close with a bang.
We both froze.
Bonnie’s eyes opened wide with obvious terror.
“Holy shit,” I whispered. “Your parents?”
She shook her head and pushed me off of her. “Worse. My brothers.”
I jumped up and scooped up our shirts before I tossed her one. I buttoned my jeans in a mad rush and shook out the shirt as the basement door opened. I glanced at the shirt in my hand, frowned at how tiny it looked, and groaned. Yes, I had tossed Bonnie a shirt, the wrong shirt. As the stairs creaked, I looked over at Bonnie and her enormous eyes widened even more.
“That’s mine,” she whispered, my shirt nearly drowning her body.
I groaned again as two boys stepped into the room and one pair of feet stopped just an inch from a condom that I must have abandoned when Bonnie had pushed me away.
I saw the guys soak in the scene—me with no shirt on, Bonnie swallowed by the wrong one. The taller of the two bent and picked up the condom at his feet. Where was the second condom? Collectively, our gazes moved to my hand where the second condom and Bonnie’s shirt still lingered.
I couldn’t move, other than to let the shirt and the partially opened condom wrapper fall from my hand. Bonnie shut her eyes tight as the condom, of course, landed on top of the shirt.
Both guys frowned angrily as they glared at me.
The smaller one, who still stood at six foot something, spoke, “Your fly is open.”
I was dead.
Excerpt #3
“It is no orphanage. Dylan, we have to get her out.”
The weight of his conviction and terror hung heavy in the air and pressed down on me.
“Let’s go.” I turned to toss my dinner bag on the porch.
Suddenly the front door swung open and my dad’s glazed, and blood shot eyes glowered down at me. His fists clenched and his jaw tightened. “You aren’t going anywhere.”
I felt Marco stiffen at my side. “Your dad?”
I nodded. “Yup, my dad.”
I sighed heavily. I did not have time for him to kick my butt tonight.
“Can we take him? I think we can take him.” Marco’s voice was tight as I saw his muscles coiling as his entire body tensed.
I shifted my gaze from Dad to look at Marco and glared at him like he was insane.
“Dude, he’s my dad.”
He shrugged. “Yeah, but it looks to me like you’re the only one who cares about that. He sure as hell doesn’t.”
And as if right on cue, I felt my dad’s fist hit the side of my face closest to him. I stumbled back, off balance from the blow.
“I so don’t have time for this tonight,” I mumbled.
“Agreed.” Marco took a step toward my dad, and for the first time, Dad seemed to notice that there was another guy with me. His eyes widened with obvious fear.
I regained my footing and raced toward them before I threw myself into Dad. My body weight and the fact that he was drunk caused him to lose his balance and both of us fell to the ground. I pushed away from him quickly and got to my feet. Standing over him, but well out of his reach, I waited to see if he was going to get up.
He mumbled and flailed in a drunken rage.
When it was obvious he was too drunk to recover, much less do any more damage, I glanced at Marco. “Are you ready?”
He grinned. “I’m somewhat impressed. Maybe Bonnie didn’t do such a bad job.”
“Shut up and come on.”
Excerpt #4
“Dain, we are here. We are walking the rest of the way.”
I sat up as Bonnie reached back from the front seat to shake me again. Still half asleep, I grabbed her hand, and she allowed me to pull her through the opening. I tugged her onto my lap in the cramped back seat and closed my arms around her. It was nice to have her back where she belonged. Whether she was Bonnie or Tara, she felt familiar.
She didn’t melt into me like she usually would have, and I tried to ignore the hurt that wreaked havoc on my heart.
“Where are Marco and Akila?” My groggy voice was thick with gravel.
“They are looking around for a place to hide the car.”
I snuggled against her neck, inhaling deeply. Her skin was warm, fragrant silk against my nose. I nuzzled deeper. “You don’t like me much do you, Bonnie?” She lifted her chin, allowing me to trail my lips along her jaw. Her breath caught as I flicked my tongue against the dip beneath her earlobe.
“You are a stranger to me, Dain, so how can I dislike you? But you aren’t the man I love. I love Dylan.”
I kissed her chin, and now her breath sped up in response. I felt her pulse racing beneath my finger tips on her wrist.
“Bonnie, if you knew what I know about Dylan, you’d hate him as much as I do.”
“I could never hate Dylan.” She turned to face me, our lips a breath away from one another. Her eyes blazed with a fire deep from within her that I had never seen in Tara, and I was almost consumed by the heat.
