Review

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Gravely Inanimated. I don’t think I read the blurb, just gathered from the title that it was mostly likely about zombies. I didn’t expect it to be a steampunk zombie novel (or zombiepunk as Ms. Wheelmaker calls it). It was an interesting concept and a twist on the zombie genre which is always fun.

I didn’t like Lucy much. She just irritated me as she acted like a spoiled brat most of the time. When Aeron saves her life at the beginning of the story, she treats him like crap, saying she had everything under control, when really, she was about to be eaten by zombies. Later, when she finds out Lord Garrett’s secret, she is beyond insolent to someone of higher social status than she. And not just him, to his mother as well.

Lord Garrett was cocky, arrogant, and confident, and he had every right to be, in my opinion. I really liked him and the way he handled things.

This book was a “borrow before you buy” for me, but definitely an interesting concept.

Review

First, I want to commend Ms. Warren on the great visuals that were available to use in this post. Absolutely amazing.

Okay, my review. While I’m not a fan of the tense in which Wander Dust is written, I was completely blown away by the story and the strong prose. After one book, I am a fan. Michelle Warren has a great gift for story telling. Add to that, her amazing covers and the drawings you see in this post (I don’t know if she drew them or not, but I don’t care. She gets extra points for them), and I’m absolutely hooked. Wander Dust is an amazing story of time travel, but it doesn’t tell it’s story through the time travel. That is to say, it doesn’t get hung up on making the travel a literary device. It’s part of the story. And I like that. I like it a lot.

For being YA, it didn’t feel like YA. I love that. It’s so refreshing not to find teenagers acting like teenagers.

I try not to mention grammatical errors unless they are really really prevalent. In this case, if there were any, I missed them because I was sooo into the story! I read this book in a day. I couldn’t get away from it! I just wanted to keep going and I cannot WAIT to get into book two of this series.

Ms. Warren, you are on my list. =)
